Jewish Heritage Tour in Bucharest
With only about 2,000 members of the Jewish community left in Bucharest today, it is difficult to imagine that, in 1930, Jews represented up to 11% of the city’s population. The Jewish quarter was severely affected by the Fascist pogrom in the 1940s, followed by demolitions in the 1980s initiated by the communist regime. Most streets were wiped out, and six synagogues and Jewish temples were demolished. Nevertheless, some emblematic buildings have survived and are here to tell their stories.

The Choral Temple (Interior Visit)
The main synagogue and best-known monument of Jewish heritage in Bucharest.
- Built in Moorish style between 1864-1866.
- Modeled after the Leopolstädter Temple, the largest synagogue of Vienna, destroyed during the Kristallnacht on November 10, 1938.
The Great Polish Synagogue (Interior Visit)
This synagogue houses the Holocaust Museum.
- Built in 1845 as a historical monument.
- Features beautiful decorations and an exhibition about the Holocaust in Romania.
The Holy Union Temple (Interior Visit)
Home to the Jewish History Museum.
- Covers the history of Jews in Romania.
- Displays a small collection of paintings by Romanian Jewish artists and ritual Jewish objects.
The Jewish State Theatre (Exterior Visit or Interior Visit upon Request)
The oldest Yiddish-language theater with uninterrupted activity in the world.
- Established around 140 years ago.
- Served as the ‘Barasheum’ during the war when Jewish actors were not allowed to perform in Romanian theaters.
Upon request (depending on local guide availability and actor rehearsals), an interior visit can be arranged, extending the tour by approximately 45 minutes.
Requests must be made at least 48 hours prior to the tour.
The Beit Hamidrash Synagogue
The oldest Jewish place of worship in Bucharest, dating back to the late 18th century.
